There are many ways to wichcraft but only one out!
The Museum of Alchemists – Gate to the alchemical Prague in Rudolf II age.
Prague is a golden, mysterious city with one hundred spires, and for all that it thanks among other to the alchemists, who belong to it inseparably.
It is gold plated by their philosopher’s stone produced perhaps in one of its hundred towers – in Mihulka, or maybe in Kelley´s tower in the House of the Donkey by the Cradle in a mysterious laboratory.
Now you can get there by visiting the Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of old Prague, where you can look under the lids of bowls of emperor Rudolf’s alchemists.
At first you will immerse in the texts of wisdom, alchemy and personalities associated with alchemy, whether the alchemists themselves, or unexpected examples as Charles IV or William Shakespeare.
You are going to walk through a magical room of the Faust´s house and then, subtly initiated, you will climb the spiral of life up to the sky. By the „spiral of life“ we mean the spiral staircase bulit by Kelley in the 16th century, and almost in heaven, you will find the authentic atmosphere of the laboratory of one of the most famous alchemists of Rudolphine times in the attic between the beams from the times of Rudolf II, the master Edward Kelley, who lived in this house.
Even his life story makes us understand that “there are many ways leading to magic, but the only way away from it…”
Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of Old Prague
You will find us in the historical centre of Prague, directly bellow the Prague castle, just under the stairs leading down from Nerudova street. Museum is located in a house At the Donkey by the Cradle, where the illustrious Alchemist Edward Kelley lived. Perhaps for this fact, or because of the unique atmosphere of the Lesser Town, the atic is the best place for our exposition full of mystery of old Prague. Museum, together with the alchemical Lab Pub Kellyxír, has three parts.
Ground floor is „in“ – information and interactive.
As the adept of alchemy who spends the first years reading and exploring, there are information about alchemy and alchemists for you from leading experts including professors of Charles University. There is also a variety of interactive exhibits and you can enter the mysterious room of the Faust’s house, where you will find not only stories of alchemists and magicians of old Prague, but also the basic motto of the museum: “there are many ways leading to magic, but the only way away from it…”. The only way is suggested by the legs of Doctor Faustus flying with up the Devil through the hole in the ceiling.
Attic – experience guided part:
After you climb up 60 steps of one of the oldest wooden staircases in Prague, which was reportedly designed by Edward Kelley himself in the 16th century, you will enter the laboratory of the famous alchemist. He spent there the last three years of his life. Not only here, but throughout the whole Prague he left his memorable tracks. The first laboratory room serves both as a storage, a library, but also as a waiting room for those who want to enter the lab. Thus there is waiting Rudolf II, John Dee, but also William Shakespeare. If you doubt he belongs here, listen carefully to the lecture of your guide, who will take you through the whole attic part of the exhibition. The second room is a separate laboratory, where you can find the creation of homunculus, you will see furnaces, retorts, you can try to blow the bellows and you will see the skeleton under a magnifying glass. You can find here a lot of experimental animals and above all, you will see a stopped explosion, personally watched by Edward Kelley.
Kellyxír – alchemical Lab Pub:
Full of exhilarating experiences from the world of alchemy you will not have to rush back to 21st century. Kellyxír will help you to overcome the shock and in a pleasant and cosy atmosphere with a high-quality wine, aromatic coffee, homemade cake or a small non-traditional snacks will extend the experience, absorb all the sensations. The webpage of Kellyxír you will find here.
